Sep. 14th, 2001 03:34 pmI'm having a belated reaction. You know me, a bit behind the curve sometimes. Stomach is anxious and fluttery. And this without any caffeine!
A local TV station is giving away patriotic streamers to put on your car antenna. Someone brought a few but ran out, so I went out and bought yards and yards of red, white, and blue ribbon and made streamers. You know, it's a weird thing. I've commented and commented, it has all seemed so unreal since I was in Atlanta. I've almost had the feeling if I came home, it would all turn out to be a big mistake. But when I stepped out into the parking lot and saw all the cars flying our national colors, a sudden lump came into my throat and the tears finally came to my eyes. They didn't fall, but at least that expression of grief finally came forth.
So I bought 50 dollars worth of red, white and blue ribbon, made streamers, and gave them away. It's a small gesture, but it's SOMETHING to assuage the feeling of helplessness. I was evidently not alone in my idea. Wal-Mart was picked over and Hobby Lobby was jammed with women making patriotic flower arrangements and other shows of nationalism.
