This morning I decided to do something different. Normally, I wear black slacks. I thought, "Let's do something different, do I still have any khaki pants I can wear instead?"

Having found a nice striped shirt to match, I was flummoxed. Most of my shoes are black. Poking around the closet, I found a nice shiny pair of brown leather shoes to wear. Added bonus, they were comfy. So I slipped them on and merrily went on my way to work.

I had noticed the bottom of the shoes seemed a bit...tacky. That is, I felt like I was sticking to the carpet on the way out. However, I was running a bit behind, so didn't stop and address this.

Walking from the car to the office building, I felt like my shoes were oddly crunchy as I walked.

When I finally sat at my desk, I examined the bottom of my shoes. I had carpet fluff, gravel, a long piece of dead grass and some twigs stuck to the bottom of my shoe. The shoe, designed to be supercomfortable, had a non-skid, rubberized pad on the heel and the footpad area on the bottom of the shoe. The shoes had sat in the back of the closet long enough that the rubberized pad had started to break down, turn soft and supersticky...

I had decided I could live with it for the rest of the day until I made a trip to the vending machine. I was sticking to the carpet, and then, when I got to the shiny tile, I left blue marks everywhere I walked, perfect impressions of the pads under the balls of my feet and at the heel. As I passed an exit door and walked over the doormat, the doormat stuck to my sole and actually came up with my foot.

Enough was enough. I made the run home and found a pair of saddle shoes.

So I arrive back at work 20 minutes later in fresh shoes.

And I step in gum.
